| BACKGROUND U3A Clarence Inc has always carried public and product liability insurance to protect the organisation against claims of our negligence. Since we began in 1993 we have developed processes to reduce risks to our members and visiting tutors and we have not had a claim for damages made against us. In recent years premiums have risen alarmingly and your Committee of Management (CoM) has monitored this situation very carefully with the aim of maintaining adequate coverage at affordable costs.
NEW PLAN Risk exists because of uncertainty about events in the operating environment and their consequences. Risk management is not only about eliminating or avoiding risk, but identifying the risk, predicting the possibility of its occurrence and minimising its impact. U3A Clarence has now drawn up a plan consolidating all previous processes to manage risk as well as containment action relating to recently identified risks. Effective management identifies threat, controls losses, safeguards against unauthorised use of funds, protects against injury and takes appropriate action to ensure legal compliance. The risk management document includes a policy statement which commits the CoM to implementation of the risk management plan. A sub-committee is responsible for the implementation and review of risk management processes. It should be noted that the CoM's responsibility lies with those matters over which it has control and is able to take action in relation to possible hazards, e.g. unauthorised use of funds, fire action and evacuation procedures, first aid and medical responses, etc. DoE has general responsibility for the safe condition of the building and environs. The successful application of our risk management initiatives requires a pro-active attitude and co-operation and participation of our members and volunteers. The plan is available to members for perusal and if you have comments and/or suggestions about risk management, please discuss the matter with any member of the sub-committee - Terry Mahoney, Helen Genders or Frank Brown. |
